Acupuncture And Depression – Is It Effective?

By Jonathan Higgins

Are you severely or mildly depressed and wondering about acupuncture and depression? According to research and case studies, acupuncture is effective in treating depression. But, did you know that there is a way to treat the depression without the needles? More on that later.

It appears that the most effective treatment for depression is medication. After all it works. I’ve used medication for both depression and anxiety and have had phenomenal success in both cases. However, I prefer to use natural remedies whenever possible because medications do have side effects and also introduce toxic elements into the body.

So what about acupuncture and depression? The good news is there is some scientific research that supports the effectiveness of acupuncture in decreasing the severity of depression in patients. Remember that medical research doesn’t really ‘prove’ anything, it just supports claims. It is really hard to conclusively prove claims.

Anyway, this study was conducted by the National Institute of Health in 1998. I will not bore you with the design of the study. You can look up the study and read that for yourself. I’ll just share the results it found on acupuncture and depression. In this controlled experiment, all the participants that received acupuncture for depression collectively experienced a 43% reduction in their depression symptoms, which was 21% greater than the dummy control group. This suggests that the acupuncture did something for the depression symptoms.

Theory on acupuncture and depression is this. Acupuncture states that there are energy pathways in the body called meridians. Various illnesses occur when these meridians become blocked. The acupuncturist attempts to unblock the clogged up meridians by inserting needles into certain points along these meridians. When the energy is allowed to flow again, the symptoms of the illness subside. And so it is with acupuncture and depression.

If you don’t like needles but are interested in the possibilities of acupuncture and depression, there is a form of acupressure that has been found to be equally successful. No needles here. It merely involves correctly tapping certain points on special meridians with your finger tips. The best thing about this approach is you can do it yourself. You don’t need to pay a professional to do it for you. Although, that option does exist.

In any event, there is a lot of promise for acupuncture and depression. With the help of a qualified psychologist you can get your symptoms under control.

Cellulite

By Rick Freeman

We all know that due to peer pressure from glamour models, film stars and singers in the pop chart scene, girls and women alike are more and more aware of how they look to other people.

In this day and age there are a lot of women that are becoming very self-conscious about their bodies in regards to the tops of their legs and their bottoms.

This is mainly due to the press and other media making them aware that it is not very socially acceptable to have dimply backsides of orange peel effects on the tops of the thighs.

This problem or condition is commonly referred to as cellulite, and believe it or not, although women are just starting to worry about more frequently now, it is actually a condition that has been around for ages.

Cellulite is a condition that is used to depict what is known as deposits of fat beneath the skin that externally gives the skin a somewhat dimpled impression, something that in effect resembles a type of orange peel look.

It’s effect is most generally observed in women, this is due to the fact that the fat is set up in large chambers, that is divided by columns of collagen fibres.

Fibrous strings of tissue link up your skin to deeper tissue layers that produces compartments of ordinary fat cells.

When the fat cells grow in size, the compartments then bulge out which then develops what is seen as a dimpling appearance on your skin.

Within a lot of people who are overweight the extra fat is forced into these compartments, which then causes them to bulge outwards.

The bulging on the surface of the skin then provides the dimply type appearance of cellulite. It is especially prone to areas such as the thighs, hips and buttocks.

Cellulite is a predetermined condition by genetics so even the thinnest of women can develop the symptoms and appearance of cellulite.

There are a lot of elements that can attribute to the weakening of the collagen fibres, which give the look of cellulite.

For instance: Aging, throughout pregnancy and hormones.

There can be even some people who have been diagnosed as more or less morbidly obese that are not necessarily genetically pre disposed to cellulite yet display no symptoms of this condition in any kind of form.

A fairly important factor to bear in mind is, that although looking at cellulite on our bodies and finding it a rather unsightly condition, it is actually quite a normal condition that is carried by lots of people. Not only for women but also for quite a few men as well.

If you are someone that has a thicker skin than the average person, then the effect of the dimples or orange peel look can be less obvious when looked at. This can then in turn enforce even further the genetic predisposition.

It is an unfortunate fact that nothing can actually stop the aging process. So the problem can become more obvious with age, because as we start to get older the skin on our bodies starts to become thinner.

Aromatherapy: New Age Fad Or Age-Old Remedy?

By Art Turner

Aromatherapy refers to the use of essential oils that have been extracted from plants, shrubs and trees. These essential oils can be used for a wide variety of purposes. They can be used to treat medical conditions or alleviate psychological ailments. Aromatherapy oils are used as cosmetics. Finally, aromatherapy can be used simply for pleasure, to help improve your mood or to reduce your stress. The essential oils of aromatherapy have the power to affect both your physical and mental state.

Aromatherapy has recently been labeled a New Age fad, but the practice of aromatherapy has a long history. The often negative use of the New Age label causes an unfortunate prejudice against a practice that has many potential benefits.

The effective use of aromatherapy requires considerable knowledge and expertise. The essential oils of aromatherapy can be applied in a wide variety of situations. They have been proven effective in treating both serious and minor ailments. Even when aromatherapy cannot provide a cure, it can improve an individual’s mood.

We often practice aromatherapy on an everyday basis without realizing it. When we choose aromas, bath oils, and air fresheners, we usually choose based on what we like, or on how the fragrance makes us feel. The refreshing scent of a pine forest, the pleasurable aromas of herbs, or the many other daily experiences we have with the scents of plant-derived substances indicate that we are actually practicing and experiencing aromatherapy in many ways.

The practice of aromatherapy for treating ailments actually predates chemical-based medicine. The essential oils of aromatherapy have been used for hundreds of years in herbal medicine, disease prevention, and in religious and public ceremonies.

The proven benefits of plant-based therapies are being overlooked in favor of artificial substitutes. It’s easy to forget that many commonly used pharmaceuticals were originally derived from plants. Many also doubt that something applied externally could possibly have an internal effect. But the answer to many of today’s diseases has been with us from the beginning, stored in the plant life around us. Aromatherapy unlocks the power of these essential oils and applies it for our benefit.

Tanning Bed Facts – What To Know

By Michelle Bery

With the ongoing work being done by researchers studying the health effects of a myriad of environmental, dietary, and chemical factors on our bodies, we are bombarded with information on a daily basis. The negative effects of sun exposure have been well documented, as have the effects of tanning beds. But for tanning bed enthusiasts, the positive feelings associated with tanning are difficult to ignore. To weigh your risks when it comes to tanning, it’s important to first understand some tanning bed facts.

One of the most important tanning bed facts to understand is that tanning beds do not eradicate the dangers of ultraviolet rays. Most of us know that the sun emits ultraviolet rays – UVA and UVB rays – that have been associated with everything from early aging to significant skin damage such as skin cancer. But what you must also understand is that tanning beds also emit these ultraviolet rays. While exposure to the more dangerous UVB rays are minimized in tanning beds, these UV rays still exist. Additionally, tanning beds actually increase exposure to UVA rays – longer UV wavelengths that reach our deeper layers of skin – to speed the tanning process. For skin that has a tendency to burn this can mean a speedier burning, rather than tanning, process.

Another one of the tanning bed facts to understand is that visiting a tanning salon does not mean you should leave your protective lotion behind. Rather, you should be just as vigilant in selecting protective lotion at the tanning salon as you would on the beach. One of the tanning bed facts that most people don’t realize is that there are lotions designed for specific skin types that are meant to provide protection in tanning beds. Any reputable tanning salon will offer a full product line of protective lotion; ask an employee for help finding one that works with your skin type.

The most important of tanning bed facts is that a tanning bed does not change your skin. If you burn at the pool then you will burn in a tanning salon. If you have fair skin that tends to burn, you’re better off avoiding tanning beds altogether. But if you must tan, do so responsibly and with knowledge behind you.
