Gift certificate for spa that closed?

My husband bought a day spa gift certificate for $400 for Mother’s Day. I have been calling for the past couple of days to make an appointment and no one answers. I went to the location and they are closed- permanently. Did we lose this money or is there a way to either get the services or a refund?

Did he buy it from that same location?
If it was chain, other locations may honor it, but if it was a stand alone facility, you are probably out of luck.
The only option I can think of, if it was not a Corp. or LLC, maybe you could place a lean against his property for the value of the gift check. But that may not hold up, and unless you are familiar with the process, the cost of getting legal council to do so would probably be more than the worth of the check.
